Worked example

With Floor-to-floor height = 3000, Target riser = 150:

RISERS NEEDED20 risers
  • Actual riser height: 150 mm
  • Tread (Blondel 2R+T≈630): 330 mm
  • Number of treads: 19
  • Total going (run): 6,270 mm
  • NBC 2016 (A-2 home) max riser 190 mm: Your 150 mm is within
  • NBC 2016 (A-2 home) min going 250 mm: Your 330 mm is within
  • NBC 2016 max 12 risers per flight: 20 - needs 2 flights with landing
Uses the Blondel comfort rule (2×riser + tread ≈ 630 mm). Reference figures: NBC 2016 Part 3 cl 12.18 for one/two-family homes (which also sets 2.2 m headroom and 1.0 m min width). NBC 2016 has been superseded by SP 7:2026 and applies only as your local bye-law adopts it - verify current local rules before building.
