How to use

  1. Pick your country for the currency, then enter the vehicle tax rate exactly as your dealer quote or local tax authority shows it - this tool does not preset official vehicle rates, because they differ by state, province and transaction.
  2. Enter vehicle price, down payment, trade-in value, dealer fees, APR and term.
  3. Tap Calculate payment.
  4. Read your monthly payment, loan amount, total interest, the year-by-year principal vs interest chart and the full amortization schedule - you can print or save it as PDF.

Worked example

Vehicle price 35,000, down payment 5,000, trade-in 0, tax 8% added on the full price, fees 500, APR 7.5%, 60 months:

MONTHLY PAYMENT667.26 USD
  • Loan amount: 33,300 USD (price + tax + fees - down - trade-in)
  • Total interest: 6,736 USD
  • Vehicle tax: 2,800 USD
  • Total cost incl. down payment: 45,036 USD
The 8% here is only an example. Vehicle tax rates, trade-in credits and what counts as taxable differ by jurisdiction and by deal - always copy the rate and base from your own quote. UK and Swiss advertised prices normally include VAT, so the included setting reads the tax out of the price instead of adding it again.

Common questions

Where do I find my tax rate?

On your dealer quote, or from your state, provincial or national tax authority. This tool deliberately does not preset official vehicle rates for the US or Canada, because vehicle tax rules differ by jurisdiction and transaction. The United Kingdom and Switzerland prefill their official standard VAT rates (20% and 8.1%), where advertised new-car prices normally already include VAT. That is a standard-rate estimate - used-car margin-scheme, zero-rated and tax-exclusive sales differ, so match the setting to your quote.

Does a trade-in reduce the tax?

It depends on your jurisdiction - some give a trade-in tax credit, others tax the full price. Set "Tax calculated on" to match your quote: full price, or price minus trade-in.

What loan amount is financed?

Vehicle price + dealer fees, minus your down payment and trade-in value - plus sales tax when you tell it tax is added on top. When tax is already included in the price, it is not added again.

Is a 72 or 84 month loan a good idea?

It lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest, and the car can lose value faster than the loan falls. The year chart shows how much interest long terms add.
